Water Extraction vs. Water Mitigation

Extraction removes standing water. Mitigation is the broader work used to limit additional damage, stabilize affected areas, and prepare the property for drying or repair.

Water extraction

This stage uses pumps, vacuums, and extraction tools to remove water from floors, carpet, and accessible areas.

Water mitigation

Mitigation can include assessment, extraction, removal of unsalvageable materials, moisture control, drying, cleaning, and documentation.

Why the distinction matters

A property may need more than extraction. The extent of moisture and the type of water determine what additional work is appropriate.
